2013-2014 CLSR Fellowship Application Open

New England Law | Boston's Center for Law and Social Responsibility Seeks a 2013-2014 Fellow

About the Position:

The Center for Law and Social Responsibility (CLSR) is seeking a graduating New England Law student to serve as its Fellow for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Applicants must be interested in completing public service legal projects in one or more of the following areas:
  • Criminal Justice
  • Environmental Advocacy
  • Immigration Law
  • Tobacco Policy and Health
  • Women and Children’s Advocacy
  • Public Interest Law
The position runs for 10 months, beginning mid-August.  During this time the Fellow is a full-time employee of New England Law | Boston, and as such receives salary and benefits. 

The CLSR Fellow provides both substantive and administrative support for all Center Projects.  In addition, the Fellow must develop and complete one or more substantial public service legal projects in one or more of the above-listed areas.  The position is highly flexible, and requires creativity, independence, initiative, and a genuine desire to spend ten months working as a lawyer and advocate in the public service field.

Past Fellows have represented clients in agency proceedings, teamed with other attorneys to write briefs, and joined advocacy groups to foster regulatory change.  Fellows are encouraged to write and teach as part of their experience.

Anna Rupani received the Honorable Reginald Lindsay Public Service Law Book Award

The Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association has named Anna Rupani, Academic Excellence Fellow and president of the Minority Students’ Association, as this year’s recipient of the Honorable Reginald Lindsay Public Service Law Book Award.  Each year, the MBLA asks all of the area law schools to nominate one or more students of color who embody those qualities that made Judge Lindsay a respected federal jurist for so many years: intellect, compassion, leadership, and a commitment to public service.  Ms. Rupani was selected for her service to the law school community and for her outstanding work with students from the Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester as part of New England Law | Boston’s Legal Scholar Mentorship Program. 

Ms. Rupani will receive the award from Cheryl Lindsay, Judge Lindsay’s widow, at the MBLA gala on Thursday March 28, 2013.

Immigration Internship Opportunity

Services for New Americans: Immigration Legal Assistance Program
SPRING AND/OR SUMMER 2013 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of New England is a non-profit organization that provides legal services to asylum seekers as well as victims of violent crime, human trafficking, and domestic violence.  The legal unit is currently seeking a legal intern to assist clients who are applying for immigration relief.  The intern will work directly with a staff attorney in the program and have the opportunity to attend client meetings, community presentations, and hearings at Immigration Court whenever possible.   The internship is unpaid.

The intern’s duties will include:
     • Assisting clients to complete applications/petitions;
     • Conducting intake interviews with potential clients;
     • Assisting staff attorneys to represent asylum seekers, including: researching country conditions, conducting legal research, drafting affidavits, and interpreting (depending on language proficiency);
     • Assisting staff attorneys to prepare VAWA self-petitions, U/T visa applications, and asylum applications.
     • Preparing advocacy materials for “know your rights” presentations; and
     • Assisting staff with trainings, meetings, and special projects.

Candidates should have the following qualifications:
     • Currently enrolled in law school;
     • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
     • Excellent research skills;
     • Foreign language proficiency preferred (especially Spanish); and
     • Demonstrated interest in human rights and immigration issues (immigration experience is preferred but not required).

Equal Justice Works National Advisory Committee

Equal Justice Works National Advisory Committee Application Opens On March 22
Our National Advisory Committee (NAC) provides a great opportunity to become more involved with Equal Justice Works. The NAC serves in an advisory board capacity to Equal Justice Works, and by serving on the NAC, you can play an important role in providing feedback and guidance on select Equal Justice Works initiatives.

We are currently seeking three law school professionals and three law student members to fill positions that will begin service on June 1, 2013 for a two year commitment that will end on June 1, 2015.  As a member of the NAC, you are required to attend an annual meeting and participate in periodic conference calls throughout the year to work on projects designed to help Equal Justice Works improve existing programs and develop new initiatives. 

Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Application

Equal Justice Summer Corps Application Deadline Extended To April 10

Students may now apply through April 10 for funding through our Summer Corps program.

Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that provides 1L and 2L students with the opportunity to earn a $1,175 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization.

AmeriCorps currently has four priority areas, and we are looking to fund projects in these areas for the 2013 Summer Corps program. Students with projects focusing on serving veterans and military families, homeowners facing foreclosure, victims of disaster, and medical-legal partnerships should apply!

Campaign Training by Mass Alliance, May 4th and 5th

Mass Alliance is a coalition of progressive organizations that work together to help get progressive leaders elected to both Massachusetts local and state government, and help pass legislation that would help Massachusetts become more progressive.

On May 4th and 5th Mass Alliance is offering a two-day intensive training course to introduce future campaign leaders to the theory and practice behind successful grassroots campaigning.
